Solar Panels

How does solar panel efficiency impact your savings?

Understand why solar panel efficiency is a critical driver for your savings. Technology, orientation, lifespan…

How does solar panel efficiency impact your savings?

You’re considering installing solar panels. You’ve probably already heard about panel power in watts. But what truly determines your savings is solar panel efficiency.

This metric reflects the real performance of your system. Understanding this figure means making the right choice from the start and avoiding paying a high price for your watts.

What is solar panel efficiency?

Solar panel efficiency is expressed as a percentage. It indicates what portion of the solar energy received is converted into electricity.

For example, an efficiency of 23% means that 23% of the sunlight hitting the panel is converted into usable electricity for your home.

The formula is simple:
Efficiency = electrical power output ÷ solar power received × 100

Don’t confuse efficiency with power:

  • Power (W or Wp : watt peak) = maximum output under lab conditions
  • Efficiency = real-world energy conversion performance

In practical terms, two solar panels with the same rated power of 500 Wp can produce very different amounts of electricity in real conditions. This is precisely why efficiency is a much more relevant indicator than power alone.

À puissance nominale égale, certains panneaux peuvent produire plus d’énergie. En effet, dans des conditions d’utilisation réelles, les panneaux affichent des performances différentes en fonction de leur rendement solaire.
Solar panel efficiency matters more than wattage: just like two 25W bulbs can deliver very different brightness, panels with the same power can produce vastly different energy output.

It is similar to comparing two light bulbs based on their wattage rather than their brightness. Today, thanks to technological advancements, we know that an LED bulb can be ten times brighter than a traditional incandescent bulb with the same nominal consumption. Should we pay the same price for these bulbs simply because they both have a nominal power of 25 watts? Or does one have more value because it produces more light per watt due to a different technology?

As with these bulbs, the technological differences between two 500 W photovoltaic panels can lead to very different real-world results. And these results directly impact the long-term return on investment of your panels.

What is the efficiency level for different types of solar panels?

There are several photovoltaic cell technologies. Each offers a different level of performance.

Monocrystalline solar panels are currently the best available, with a minimum efficiency of 23%.

SunPower panels stand out in this category. Our back-contact panels reach up to 24,7% efficiency. The Shingled range reaches up to 23.8% efficiency.

These performance levels place SunPower among the highest efficiencies available in the residential and commercial market.

What factors influence the efficiency of a solar panel?

The actual performance of a solar panel system does not depend solely on the chosen technology. Several external parameters also play an important role.

Solar panel orientation and tilt

The orientation of your solar panels is critical.

  • South-facing is ideal (in France / Northern Hemisphere)
  • Best tilt: 30°–35°

In this setup, photovoltaic cells capture the maximum solar radiation, both in summer and winter.

If your roof does not allow a south-facing orientation, choose south-west first, then south-east. A north-facing orientation should be avoided entirely, as the loss of production would be too significant to ensure a reasonable return on investment and savings.

Sunlight exposure: a key variable depending on your region

Solar energy production varies greatly depending on geographic location.

  • Northern Europe (Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Nordics): 800–1,200 kWh/kWp/year
  • Central Europe (France, Austria, Czechia, Poland): 9,00–1,400 kWh/kWp/year
  • Southern Europe (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece): 1,000–1,800 kWh/kWp/year

In practical terms, a well-oriented 3 kWp system produces roughly 2,700 to 4,500 kWh per year across Europe, depending on location.

Temperature: an often overlooked factor

One might think that the hotter it gets, the more solar panels produce. In reality, the opposite happens. A photovoltaic solar panel performs optimally at 25°C. Beyond that, efficiency typically decreases by about 0.35% per additional degree.

This means that on a 35°C day, a panel loses roughly 3% of its efficiency.

This is why panels with a low temperature coefficient perform better. SunPower back-contact panels have a temperature coefficient as low as -0.26% per degree Celsius. They remain highly efficient even during periods of intense heat.

How to calculate the amount of electricity your system will produce

Electricity generation from solar depends on:

  1. System size
  1. Sun exposure
  1. Panel efficiency

A household in Lyon (France) installs 6 SunPower back-contact solar panels, each rated at 500 Wp (watts peak). This represents a total capacity of approximately 3 kWp. The roof of the house is well oriented, without shading, and has a tilt of 30°. This installation will produce about 3,940 kWh in the first year and still up to 3,250 kWh after 40 years.

This is enough to cover a large share of the needs of a two- to three-person household.

For larger projects, production capacity can reach much higher levels. A 9 kWp installation facing south with an ideal tilt will produce between 11,000 and 12,600 kWh per year in southern Europe. This level of production allows for a very high degree of energy independence.

For businesses looking to optimize their solar installation, solutions tailored to larger surface areas exist.

Does the lifespan of solar panels affect efficiency?

Yes, photovoltaic cells gradually degrade over time. A standard solar panel loses up to 0.5%  efficiency each year. Manufacturers generally guarantee 85-90% of the initial power after 25 years.

SunPower panels perform significantly better. Their maximum annual degradation rate is only 0.25%. Their lifespan is guaranteed for 40 years, including product, performance, and service. The minimum guaranteed output in the first year is 99%.

These figures are significant. Over 25 years, and even more over 40 years, a degradation rate that is twice as low represents tens of thousands of additional kWh produced. This translates directly into real savings on your electricity bill.

High-efficiency SunPower solar panels deliver long-term energy savings, maintaining strong performance and minimal degradation over decades of real-world use.

Real-world results: what SunPower solar panels actually produce

Technical figures are useful, but real-world results are even more telling.

  • 6 kWc system installed 7 years ago (South France)
  • ~€2,700/year in savings
  • System already paid off and continue to deliver stable energy without significant efficiency decrease.

Businesses also benefit.

  • Next Hydraulics (Italy)
  • 481 panels installed in 2008

After 18 years:

  • Same performance level observed, even higher output in recent years
  • Avg: 1204 kWh/kWc

CEO Oreste Masetti’s statement:

“Thanks to the superior performance in terms of efficiency and energy output of SunPower panels compared to competing products, we achieved our objective. I can only recommend business leaders invest in photovoltaic installations for every new building, as well as for buildings needing roof renovation or energy system upgrades. Adopting a more environmentally friendly solution allows us to reduce our energy bills and be as independent as possible.”

How to optimise your solar panel performance

Several key decisions help maximize the efficiency of your photovoltaic project.

  • Aim for south orientation + 30–35° tilt
  • Avoid shading (trees, chimneys, antennas)
  • Rely on a certified professional for your solar installation. A qualified installer will size your project according to your real needs. Our installers are selected for their technical expertise and field experience.

Even in non-ideal conditions, high-efficiency panels improve results and help you achieve your self-consumption goals.

Solar panel efficiency: the key to long-term savings

Solar panel efficiency is much more than a technical number on a product sheet. It directly reflects how much electricity your system will produce over 25, 30, or even 40 years.

By combining high-performance panels with a well-designed installation, you will ensure real and lasting profitability.

So, choose your panels based on more than just their nominal power. Look at their efficiency, degradation rate, and warranty duration. These are the three indicators that determine the true return on your solar investment.
